Black Friday vs. Green Friday
Coming straight from the United States, Black Friday is held every year the day after Thanksgiving Thursday. On this day, promotions skyrocket and consumers have been rushing into stores since 1960.
The phenomenon appeared in France in 2010 and the 2019 edition promises to be dynamic.
One out of two French people plans to enjoy Black Friday, with an average budget of around 230€. In France, some retailers even practice Black week with promotions offered over a whole week.
However, despite this strong enthusiasm for this event, half of consumers consider it as “one more marketing find to make you spend more”.
Thus many associations and brands have decided to denounce or launch actions against Black Friday.
For example, Label Emmaüs is launching the“Hack Friday”.
With mobile hangers indicating that new items also exist in a “recycled and solidarity” version on their site.
Another initiative is gaining momentum with the Green Friday movement.
Created in 2017, this ecological alternative to Black Friday raises public awareness of the social and environmental consequences of hyperconsumption.
Members of this collective movement organize events around the circular economy or donate part of their turnover to an association committed to responsible consumption. For this year 2019, more than 200 events are planned in France and Belgium.
