The Development of Electric Cars in Europe in 2025

The year 2025 marks a decisive turning point for the development of electric cars in Europe, representing a crucial year for the automotive industry and the continent’s ecological transition.

After a slight dip in sales in 2024, with 3 million units sold (-3%), the European electric car market is expected to experience a significant rebound in 2025. According to forecasts by Transport & Environment (T&E), the market share of electric vehicles in Europe should reach between 20% and 24% by the end of the year. This growth would represent about double the figures from the previous year, signalling a major acceleration in the adoption of electric vehicles.

What are the key factors behind this growth?

1) New regulations
European CO2 emission standards have been tightened since January 1, 2025, forcing car manufacturers to sell more than 20% electric models to avoid heavy fines. This regulatory pressure is pushing the industry to accelerate its transition to electric.

2) New Affordable Models
The year 2025 will see the arrival of numerous compact and affordable electric models on the market, with prices ranging between 20,000 and 30,000 euros. These vehicles, such as the Renault 5, Citroën C3, or Hyundai Inster, aim to convince middle-class consumers to switch to electric, both in urban and rural areas.

3) Infrastructure Improvement
Although the lack of charging stations remains a barrier to adoption, efforts are underway to improve the charging infrastructure across Europe, which should reassure consumers about the range of electric vehicles.

Despite these positive prospects, challenges remain. European consumers, with the exception of Scandinavian countries, are still hesitant to electrify, mainly due to the high prices of electric vehicles and the fear of breakdown due to the lack of charging stations.

The year 2025 is shaping up to be a pivotal moment for the electric car market in Europe. With the introduction of new affordable models, the strengthening of environmental regulations, and the improvement of charging infrastructures, the European automotive industry is on the brink of a major transformation towards electrification. This evolution will play a crucial role in achieving the CO2 emission reduction targets set by the European Union, thus contributing to the realization of the European Green Deal.
