Towards responsible and sustainable tourism?

Tourism, a hot topic in this summer and holiday season …

In this economic sector, initiatives from start-ups, traditional businesses or even citizens are emerging, oriented towards a responsible and sustainable tourism model. Will they become new popular uses? Until redefining the notion of tourism?

First of all, what is responsible and sustainable tourism?

This notion is inspired by Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland. She described sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.

The year 2017 was also defined as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism. To allow the tourism market to highlight this tourism trend in full development.

Faced with the ecological emergency, to preserve the planet from global warming favored by the pollution of human activities, new concepts emerge in the offer of tourist mobility …

Let’s mention the “cotrainage”, developed by the French start-up AllonsBonTrain:

She offers to buy tickets in group via her online platform, to obtain reduced prices up to -60%. That to encourage travel by train, which have a lower impact on pollution than the car or plane, for example.

In addition to these economic and ecological aspects, she promotes cultural events, musical festivals, which even become partners in her approach. It allows their audience to meet and come to share their events in group. It can also be extended to corporate events, sports, students, or even weddings!

The connected solution “We Now”, that can be installed on cars, for fleets or indivduals:

It saves fuel, drives energy efficiency and eco-driving (CO2 emissions) to reduce the impact on the climate. It also makes it possible to offset its carbon footprint by financing internationally labeled projects aimed at reducing the same amount of CO2 emitted.

Or, the solution “The Treep”, “mobility planner”, for now addressed to professionals:

This innovative application makes it possible to compare and book different combinations of transport modes to get to the same destination. It shows the duration, cost and carbon footprint of each trip. To do so, choose the least impactful trip for the planet. In addition, it also offers a reforestation action aimed at compensating for the amount of CO2 emitted.

The founders of this solution started from the reasoning that the impulse can come only from companies. Since the individual himself alone refuses to make efforts. This allowed them to be rewarded by the Tourism Trophy, organized by the French Travel Companies in June 2019.

The creation of labels:

In particular, the label of responsible tourism created by the ATR (Association for Responsible Tourism). It even became the first association of the actors in the travel industry in France.

The Fairbnb collaborative platform, which promotes eco-responsible tourism:

It was created in the spring of 2019, in five pilot European cities (Amsterdam, Barcelona, Bologna, Valencia and Venice), by a community of activists. This in response to Airbnb’s problems with tourism.

It offers rental of private homes, for which a part of the profits (50%) will be used to develop the localities concerned. Users will be able to choose the local project they wish to support. The idea is to bring a positive impact to the communities in which Fairbnb will operate, involving the renter and the traveler.

Fairbnb was created under a cooperative statute, it is managed by the citizens themselves, in collective ownership.

Finally, let us mention the roadmap for 2030 from the World Tourism Organization:

With the main objective of extending sustainable commitments to the entire tourism sector. According to the organization, “it is now crucial to ensure the sustainability of sustainable tourism and that it is economically viable, culturally accepted and universally practiced”.
